**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been quite shy and introverted, immersing myself in a completely unfamiliar environment felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and many delightful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was establishing new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my initial day settling into student housing—I spent a whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some lasting friendships.

Imperial has transformed into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others facing the same experiences. The main takeaway I’ve gathered is that taking that first step is invariably rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Coping with the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university material. The transition from A-level studies to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more trying. There were moments when it was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially when observing others engrossed in their studies.

What aided me through this phase was the reminder that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I found something confusing, it was likely that my peers were having difficulties too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Reaching out for support early can significantly impact how you manage the workload.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the aspects I came to value greatly was the amazing support from the Materials Science department staff. They truly care about our success and are always willing to listen to our worries. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, ensuring we had access to the resources needed for our success.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

As I look back, this past year has enlightened me that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. Whether it was forming friendships, managing academic stress, or seeking help, I came to realize that I was never alone. There are countless resources and individuals eager to assist, and embracing these opportunities enriched my experience considerably.

Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to strike a balance between my academics and enjoying life, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take that plunge, ask for help when necessary, and be sure to relish the experience.
