**Musings on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was coming. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. In hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enriching experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your chief worries. On my inaugural day in student housing, the thought of encountering new individuals was so unnerving that I remained in my room for the entirety of the day. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships of my life.

The main lesson? Take the plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and ways to connect with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With a richly diverse student community, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel daunted when you observe others studying and begin to question your own capabilities.

What aided me during this period was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The best strategy is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to request assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department faculty. They are genuinely invested in student success and are consistently receptive to feedback and dialogue. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I now wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the start, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members and acquire valuable perspectives about the department. There are numerous ways to establish connections with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My greatest takeaway from this? Capitalize on the support that’s available—you can never have an excess of assistance.

### Concluding Reflections

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt prior to beginning university was largely misplaced. With adequate support from both staff and peers, those early fears quickly dissipated. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never isolated in this endeavor. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve also found ways to relish my university experience.

For anyone gearing up to start their own university journey—embrace the challenges, pursue support, and seize every chance for growth. You will not regret it.
