**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what the future held. As a first-year student beginning my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself entering uncharted territory. Stepping outside my comfort zone and taking risks were things I wasn’t used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might resonate with that sentiment. On my first day in student accommodations, just before the academic year commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can state with confidence that I’ve developed some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has truly become a second home to me, and it merely required a little small talk with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings.
So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that first step is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right from the start, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at facilitating connections with others. Most importantly, I understood that being authentic is essential. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when witnessing other students study seemingly with more confidence.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone faces struggles at some point. If you’re unsure about something, the odds are that others are feeling the same way. The best course of action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the habit of asking for help is one of the most important abilities you can nurture in your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, one of the standout aspects of my experience has been the phenomenal support from the Materials department. The professors and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. They consistently engage with us throughout the year, addressing our questions and providing counsel.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the end of the academic year, and I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge strong connections with faculty members. Developing relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My key takeaway? Leverage the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt before starting university was unwarranted. Numerous support networks exist, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate various challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is achievable.
If you’re on the brink of starting your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself. You’ll grow beyond your expectations.
