**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed by nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what was forthcoming. I was on the brink of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered in the beginning was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be among your primary worries as well. I recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself.

Yet, as I write this now, I can assertively declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely required venturing beyond my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with peers in similar situations.

So, what’s the takeaway? The most beneficial action you can take at the year’s outset is to make that initial leap. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle. Above all, remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you are sure to find others who resonate with your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The leap from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s simple to become overwhelmed or question your competence, especially when observing others studying and assuming they have everything under control.

What supported me through this phase was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find a topic difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are facing the same issue. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

One of the aspects I’ve grown to value the most is the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and consistently engage with us throughout the year to address any issues.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. In the beginning, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which facilitated relationship-building with staff members. This turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are several avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My most significant insight? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are countless support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to face challenges in isolation. Most crucially, I’ve learned how to juggle academic pressures while also enjoying my university experience.

For anyone about to embark on their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, ask for assistance whenever necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
