**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been quite shy and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and extraordinary experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the struggle to make friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a major concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.
The vital lesson I learned? Take that initial step. Even if it seems daunting, there will be ample ice-breakers and social gatherings to help you connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial boasts a wide array of students, and you’re bound to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course materials. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more profound. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when observing others study and begin to question your own capabilities.
What supported me through this was understanding that everyone faces difficulties at some stage. If you find something confusing, chances are that others are struggling too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the most pivotal skills you can hone during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and are continually receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our needs and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, and I wish I had earlier. One of the most beneficial decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to interact with staff members and forge connections that proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my initial year at Imperial, I’ve realized that the fears and worries I had before starting were mostly unfounded. There is plentiful support from both staff and fellow students, and I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone. Most crucially, I’ve found a way to balance academic demands with enjoyment and fun.
For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
