**Musings on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what awaited me. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I see a year rich in personal development, challenges, and amazing experiences. So, what have I absorbed, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may concern you as well. I recall my first day moving into my accommodation—I felt so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day secluded in my room. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.
What is the crucial lesson I took away? Take the plunge. Even if you’re feeling apprehensive, there will be numerous ice-breaker gatherings and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to the Educational Demands
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more challenging. At times, I felt inundated and questioned my capabilities, particularly when I witnessed others immersed in their studies.
How did I manage to persevere? By reminding myself that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I had difficulty grasping a topic, it was likely that others did as well. The most beneficial action I took was reaching out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help early on is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department is remarkable. The professors genuinely desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to input. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
Although I did not fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had contacted them earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and engaging with them can profoundly impact your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Capitalize on the assistance offered—you can never have too much support.
### Final Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I held before starting university were unfounded. Countless support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, to aid you in transitioning. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone. Despite the unavoidable pressure of exams and deadlines, I’ve also learned how to savor my university experience.
For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: embrace the obstacles, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You will evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll look back on your first year with satisfaction.
