### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the journey that awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. However, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
Among the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to meet anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations.
So, what did I discover? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is brimming with diverse individuals, and you’re bound to find friends who resonate with you.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the level of workload and the complexity of the course material. There was a distinct increase in rigor from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first to the second term. At times, I felt overwhelmed and questioned my abilities, especially seeing others studying rigorously.
What helped me persevere was the realization that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I had difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar challenges. The most valuable lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a vital part of the learning process.
#### Engaging with Faculty is Crucial
One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support from the faculty. The staff genuinely wishes for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and discussions about any difficulties we encounter.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members. This proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has illuminated that the apprehensions I held before entering university were mostly misplaced. There exists a tremendous amount of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help navigate any difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling and enjoyable student life is indeed possible.
If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, embrace the experience, take those leaps of faith, and remember—you’ve got this!
