**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, immersing myself in an entirely new setting was daunting. Looking back, I see a year rich with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. However, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant obstacle I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a concern for you as well. I vividly remember settling into my accommodations a few days before classes commenced and spending an entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to step outside and introduce myself.
Today, I’m proud to say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was venturing beyond my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings.
So, what has this taught me? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with new people. Above all, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re destined to meet individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the complexity of the coursework. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overburdened or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and seemingly grasping concepts more swiftly.
What aided me was realizing that we’re all in similar circumstances. If you’re finding something challenging, it’s likely that others are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
A standout aspect of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and maintain active communication with us throughout the academic year.
While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to build strong relationships with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely beneficial, and there are myriad ways to achieve this. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that many of the apprehensions I had before entering university were unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the complexities of university life. Most crucially, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it is feasible to enjoy university life even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
If you’re on the verge of starting your first year, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
