**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, uncertainty, and skepticism about the upcoming journey. I was about to embark on my first year pursuing [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been quite introverted, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and an abundance of unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, as I reflect now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life.

The main takeaway? Make that first move. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and avenues to connect with others. Most crucially, just be your authentic self—Imperial boasts a diverse community, and you’ll surely encounter those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-level studies to university-level academia was a significant leap, and the challenges intensified as the year unfolded. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing peers studying fervently. Nevertheless, I quickly came to understand that everyone faced similar challenges. If I found a topic difficult, it was likely that others did too.

The most critical lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, asking for help is essential. Embracing the habit of questioning and collaborating with others profoundly impacted my academic journey.

### The Significance of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most fulfilling parts of my first year was connecting with the staff in the Materials department. They truly prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievement. While I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later on, I wish I had engaged with them sooner.

In the beginning, I ventured out and became a well-being representative for my year. This involvement enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with educators, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the available resources—there’s no such thing as too much support!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the fears and worries I had prior to starting university were frequently unfounded. With the support of faculty and fellow students, I navigated the hurdles and cherished my time at Imperial. Most importantly, I discovered that I was never alone in facing my challenges.

University represents a journey of development, and while there will be moments of stress, there will also be amazing experiences and friendships that make it all worthwhile. If you’re about to embark on your own adventure, welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and savor the experience!
