**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. As an individual who had always been somewhat shy and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I realize it has been a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. What insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be something you’re concerned about as well. On my first day settling into accommodation, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to reach out to others. Yet here I am today, proudly stating that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
Imperial has transformed into my second home, and it simply required me to step outside my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same transition. My most important takeaway? Take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—many icebreaker events will be available to help foster connections. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Changes
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. At times, I felt as if I wasn’t keeping pace, particularly when I observed others studying with confidence.
What aided me through this period was the realization that we were all experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing the same difficulty. The essential lesson here? Never hesitate to seek assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or professors, asking for help is one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support provided by the faculty. The staff genuinely seeks students’ success and is always receptive to feedback. They comprehend the difficulties we encounter and actively endeavor to assist us throughout the academic year.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members. Establishing rapport with your professors and academic advisors can be tremendously rewarding, and I wholeheartedly encourage leveraging the resources available to you. The more support you pursue, the better prepared you’ll be to navigate university life.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the concerns I had—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, from faculty and fellow students alike, to assist you through any difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated.
