**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and enthusiasm as I geared up to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Entering into the unknown felt intimidating, particularly for someone who has always been introverted. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary hurdles I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be among your top worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours in solitude, feeling too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, over the course of the year, I cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has morphed into a second home, and all it took was a bit of casual conversation with others navigating similar experiences.
So, what was my takeaway? Taking the initiative is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless icebreaker occasions and chances to meet fresh faces. Most crucially, just be yourself—Imperial is brimming with a diverse array of individuals, and you’re sure to encounter like-minded companions.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Shifting from A-levels to university-level studies represented another significant challenge. The academic load was noticeably more intense, and the complexity heightened even further in the second term. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially upon witnessing others immersed in their studies. However, I quickly understood that my peers were experiencing similar difficulties. If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely that others are puzzled too—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
Pursuing help is among the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s from peers or instructors, reaching out for support can drastically alter your experience.
### The Significance of Interacting with Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and conversations about any obstacles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later on, I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I embraced the opportunity to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with professors and academic advisors, and doing so can substantially enrich your university journey. My primary lesson? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was entirely natural—and often misplaced. With the appropriate backing from faculty and fellow students, I could maneuver through challenges and fully seize my experience. Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that I’m never isolated, and it’s feasible to relish university life even in the face of exam pressures and tight deadlines.
