**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Now, as I reflect back, I recognize a year teeming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be among your top concerns as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships.
Imperial has evolved into a second home for me, and all it required was a little small talk with those who were in a similar situation. My key takeaway? Make that bold move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most significantly, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting used to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated when you observe others studying and begin to question your own skills.
What aided me during this phase was the understanding that everyone experiences difficulties at some stage. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most effective course of action is to seek assistance—whether that be from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to request support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
In relation to support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely want students to thrive and are cognizant of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, ensuring we had the necessary resources.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which proved to be immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Take full advantage of the support that’s available—you can never receive too much assistance.
### In Closing
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that many of the apprehensions I had prior to starting university were unfounded. There is always support at hand, whether from staff or fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to manage academic demands while enjoying my time at university.
If you’re about to embark on your adventure at Imperial, be aware that challenges will arise—but so will remarkable opportunities for personal growth, friendships, and unforgettable moments. Take the plunge, request help when necessary, and above all, savor the journey!
