**Reflections on My Initial Year at Imperial College London**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting now, I can see a year rich in personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the prospect of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student, you might share similar feelings of dread. On my initial day in student housing, right before the term commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too nervous to go out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has turned into a second home, and all it took was a little small talk with others who were feeling just like me. The most significant lesson I learned? Dive in early. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, be genuine—Imperial is filled with a diverse range of individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who resonate with you.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
The change from A-levels to university-level studies was a tremendous leap, and the challenge only intensified from the first to the second term. This transition can be daunting, and it’s all too easy to feel as though you’re falling behind, especially when witnessing others studying with great intensity.
What helped me persevere was the understanding that everyone faces difficulties at some point. If you find a topic confusing, it’s likely that others do too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or academic staff. Reaching out for help is not a sign of deficiency; it’s a vital skill that will aid your journey toward success.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
One of the most enriching facets of my first year was the remarkable support provided by the Materials department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and well-being, fostering open communication throughout the year.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking proactive steps from the beginning can be transformative. One of the wisest decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with faculty members and gain valuable perspectives. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has demonstrated to me that many of the concerns I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. With the right backing from both staff and fellow students, obstacles can become far more surmountable. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone and that it is indeed possible to juggle academic obligations with enjoyment and personal development.
For anyone embarking on their university adventure: embrace the experience, take the risk, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll find your place, just as I have.
