**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had been shy and reserved beforehand, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of fun. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the challenge of forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.

I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with a few straightforward conversations with others who shared my experience. My key takeaway? Take initiative early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with others. Above all, be true to yourself—Imperial hosts a vibrant mix of individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Rigor

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more extreme. It can be overwhelming to see others studying and begin to question your own capabilities.

What assisted me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing the same challenges. The best course of action is to seek help—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and acknowledge the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, making sure our concerns were addressed.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had tapped into it sooner. One of the finest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with staff, which was immensely rewarding. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Take full advantage of the available support—you can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unnecessary. There are numerous support mechanisms available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate their journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve mastered how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment, truly maximizing my time at Imperial.

If you are about to embark on your university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, reach out for help when needed, and fully embrace the experience. You will develop in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an extraordinary first year.
