**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and a hint of fear about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, entering an entirely fresh chapter in my life. As someone who has traditionally been more introverted, immersing myself in new environments was not within my comfort zone. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year rich with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
A significant challenge I encountered at the university’s onset was the difficulty of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. On my first day in university housing, I was so daunted by the thought of meeting others that I spent the entire day in my room, sidestepping social engagements.
Fast forward to the present, and I can earnestly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with individuals who were equally new.
So, what did I take away from this? First, taking that first step is always a rewarding decision. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the most important thing you can do is remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was getting accustomed to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was drastic, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially when I noticed others studying and seemingly grasping concepts more rapidly than I was.
What assisted me during these challenging moments was the reminder that I was not in this alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, asking for help is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One aspect that profoundly impressed me this year was the outstanding support from the academic staff within the Materials department. They genuinely aspire for student success and are always ready to address any concerns. Throughout the year, they engaged with us regularly, making sure we had the resources and guidance necessary.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to interact closely with the staff. Cultivating relationships with lecturers and support personnel is immensely advantageous, and I highly recommend every student take full advantage of the resources available. You can never have an excess of support!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced before beginning university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. There are myriad support networks available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring no one ever has to navigate alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned the art of balancing academic responsibilities with savoring university life.
If you’re on the verge of commencing your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that arises.
