**Reflections on My First Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, ambiguity, and anticipation as I geared up to embark on my initial year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Yet, reflecting on the year now, I recognize a journey filled with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary challenges I encountered at the outset was establishing friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this may be a concern for you too. I recall spending my first day in student housing remaining in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life.
What’s the crucial lesson I took away? Take that initial leap of faith early. Even if uncertainty lingers, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or question your abilities when witnessing others studying with confidence.
What benefitted me the most was acknowledging that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a particular topic, chances are other students are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or academic staff. Learning to ask for support early on is among the most valuable skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about the success of their students and are always receptive to feedback and dialogue regarding any challenges we encounter. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role facilitated relationship-building with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the fears I harbored prior to starting university were unwarranted. There is a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, and no one truly has to face their struggles alone. Most importantly, I’ve acquired the ability to balance academic responsibilities while enjoying university life.
For anyone about to embark on their own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek support as necessary, and don’t hesitate to step beyond your comfort zone. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about an incredible first year, just as I am now.
