**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and enthusiasm as I set out on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Entering the unfamiliar was intimidating, especially for someone like me who has always been somewhat shy. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich in personal development, difficulties, and amazing moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my initial day in student housing, isolating myself in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. However, fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve met some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever known.
What was the key takeaway for me? Take the plunge. Even if you feel reluctant, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. Given the diverse student population, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Transitioning from A-levels to university-level education represented another major challenge. The workload and complexity of the material intensified, particularly between the first and second terms. It was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially when observing others studying fervently.
What helped me persevere was recognizing that I wasn’t isolated—many of my classmates were experiencing the same difficulties. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether reaching out to peers or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your inaugural year.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most delightful surprises during my first year was the tremendous support from the Materials Science department staff. They are genuinely invested in student success and remain receptive to feedback and conversations about the obstacles we encounter.
Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative provided me opportunities to foster relationships with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty and academic advisors, and establishing these connections can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Final Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I held before starting university were unfounded. There is an abundance of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. Most crucially, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone on this path. In spite of the pressures from exams and deadlines, I’ve also learned how to balance diligent work with enjoyment.
For anyone on the brink of starting their own university journey, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and capitalize on every opportunity. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about an extraordinary first year.
