**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was in store. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Departing from my comfort zone was foreign to my previously timid and reserved nature. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you are an incoming student reading this, you might share those same feelings of unease. On my first day in student housing, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, as I reflect now, I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.

Imperial has transformed into a second home, and it began with simply engaging in small conversations with others who were navigating the same experience. My key insight? Take the first step early. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adjusting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the material. Transitioning from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more dramatic. There were moments when I felt inundated and questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others engaged in their studies.

What aided me during these times was realizing I was not alone in my struggles. If I faced difficulties with a topic, it was likely that others were experiencing the same. The most valuable advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most important skills you can hone in your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most reassuring elements of my program was the outstanding support from the teaching staff. They are genuinely invested in student success and are always willing to listen to our queries. Throughout the year, they ensured we felt connected and supported.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done it earlier. Initially, I took the initiative to become a year wellbeing representative, which helped me foster connections with faculty. Building relationships with the staff is incredibly advantageous, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I look back, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored before and during university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly on my own and that balancing academic demands with an enjoyable university experience is entirely feasible.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, embrace the hurdles, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, make the most of the experience.
