### Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quiet and introverted, embracing this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered at the onset was connecting with others. This is a concern many incoming students share, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with simple exchanges with people sharing similar situations.
So, what did I uncover? Primarily, taking that first step is always beneficial. If you feel hesitant, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Additionally, being true to yourself is vital. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the change from the first term to the second was even more daunting. At times, it was easy to become disheartened and question my capabilities, especially when observing others study with assurance.
Nevertheless, I soon recognized that everyone was navigating similar difficulties. If I was puzzled by something, there was a high probability that others were too. The most crucial lesson I internalized was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from peers or professors. Asking for help is not a sign of inadequacy; rather, it’s a fundamental aspect of thriving and learning at university.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most remarkable aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support offered by the faculty. They sincerely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, ensuring that we felt heard.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for the year, which helped me forge connections with staff members. This experience proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive help!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has revealed that the anxiety I felt before starting university was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from both staff and fellow students, to facilitate the adjustment. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between academic responsibilities and enjoying university life.
For those preparing to embark on their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take that initial step, be receptive to new experiences, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. University is a period for growth, and with the right attitude, it can become one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
