**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and fear of what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I now recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

A particularly challenging aspect of entering university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a concern for you. I vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I was so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, far too anxious to reach out to others.

Now, as I look back, I can assert that I have made some truly wonderful friends. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all starting from brief chats with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. The most significant lesson I gleaned? Make that initial move. Even if you don’t think you’re ready, there will be ample opportunities and icebreaking events to connect with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you will certainly encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was getting used to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. Transitioning from A-levels to university study was a substantial leap, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly intense. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with ease.

What assisted me along the way was the understanding that everyone faces challenges. If you find something difficult, it’s likely others are struggling too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the key skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

A significant highlight of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in the success of students and are always receptive to feedback and interaction. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and are ready to assist.

Though I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into this resource earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for the year. This position facilitated connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with instructors, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my earlier anxieties were unfounded. There is a wealth of support to be found, from both staff and fellow students. This year has shown me that I am never truly isolated and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is achievable.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey and are feeling anxious, rest assured that this is completely natural. Embrace the opportunities, seek support whenever necessary, and most crucially, cherish the experience.
