**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich in growth, trials, and amazing moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forging new friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, you might relate. On my first day in student housing, the thought of meeting new individuals was so nerve-wracking that I confined myself to my room throughout the day. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

What was the takeaway from this experience? Firstly, taking that initial step is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaking events and chances to socialize will present themselves. Secondly, the best strategy is to embrace your true self. With such a varied student demographic, you’re likely to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the volume of work and the heightened difficulty of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university life was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more daunting. At times, I questioned my competence, particularly when I observed peers mastering their studies with ease while I struggled to understand specific concepts.

An essential lesson I discovered was that I wasn’t alone—many of my classmates faced similar difficulties. If you don’t grasp a topic, there’s a good chance others are in the same boat. The most effective way to tackle this is to seek assistance, whether from fellow students or instructors. Requesting help is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s a crucial skill for achieving success.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

A highlight of my first year was the tremendous support I received from the faculty. The staff within the Materials Science department genuinely prioritize the well-being and academic success of students. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and proactively reach out to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it sooner. One valuable decision I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the fears and apprehensions I held prior to starting university were predominantly unfounded. With adequate support from faculty and fellow students, I was able to tackle challenges and develop both academically and personally. Most importantly, I discovered that I was never alone in my difficulties.

University isn’t solely about academics—it involves embracing new adventures, creating meaningful relationships, and finding joy even during stressful times. If you’re about to commence your own journey, my straightforward advice is: take that plunge, reach out for help when necessary, and savor every moment of the experience.
