**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university, and confronting the unknown was intimidating for someone like me, who tends to be naturally introverted. Now, as I reflect, I perceive a year abundant with growth, obstacles, and numerous delightful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the quest to form friendships. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day at student housing, just prior to the start of the term, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day within my room, far too anxious to venture out and make introductions.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it necessitated was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with those in similar circumstances.
So, what have I discovered? Firstly, that initial leap is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not entirely prepared, remain untroubled—there will be numerous icebreaker events and possibilities to connect with others. Secondly, the best course of action is to be authentic. With such a varied student population, you are likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was getting accustomed to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was noteworthy, and the transition from the first to the second term posed even greater challenges. It’s easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities when observing others studying rigorously.
What aided me in navigating this? Reminding myself that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were having difficulties as well. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—be it from peers or instructors. Requesting help when necessary is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Valuing Engagement with Faculty
One of the outstanding features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the supportive faculty. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Seize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has demonstrated that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even during the year—was often unfounded. A wealth of support exists, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never completely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic pressures while enjoying university life.
For anyone about to begin their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek assistance when required, and remember that obstacles are merely opportunities for growth.
