**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was a bundle of nerves, uncertainty, and anticipation as I geared up to commence my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been more introverted, diving into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, upon reflection, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Meeting New People

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might evoke some concerns for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted that I remained in my room throughout the day, too apprehensive to reach out to others. Yet now, looking back, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

What was the essential takeaway? Take risks. It may be uncomfortable at the start, but there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, stay authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to come across those who share your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

The leap from A-levels to university was a considerable undertaking, and the academic demands only escalated as the year advanced. At times, it was simple to feel swamped, particularly when comparing myself to my peers. However, I soon understood that everyone was tackling similar struggles.

My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, reaching out for help is vital. If you’re finding a concept challenging, it’s likely that others are too. Learning to ask for help early on can significantly enhance your confidence and grasp of the material.

### Assistance from Faculty and Well-being Programs

One of the most invaluable elements of my first year was the outstanding support from the faculty in the Materials department. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and conversations about any issues we might encounter.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral services until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Taking on the position of year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be a tremendous benefit. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the resources available—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on my first year, I realize that the jitters and concerns I had prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. There is a plethora of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate the hurdles of university life. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and it is feasible to juggle academic pressures while enjoying a rich and gratifying student experience.

To anyone on the brink of their university adventure—embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. It’s a path of growth, and it is undoubtedly worth pursuing.
