### Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and reserved individual, immersing myself in an entirely new setting felt intimidating. As I reflect on this year now, I recognize it as a time of personal development, hurdles, and many enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the beginning was socializing and making connections. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be feeling similar unease about meeting new peers. On my first day in the student residence, I was so daunted that I ended up spending the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations.

So, what insights have I gained? First, taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Second, being authentic is the best approach. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The shift from A-levels was quite significant, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to become inundated and doubt my capabilities, particularly while observing my peers studying diligently.

However, it soon became clear that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were as well. The most crucial lesson I learned was the importance of seeking assistance—be it from classmates or instructors. Asking for help is not an indication of weakness; it’s a vital aspect of the learning process.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support provided by the academic staff. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the bold step of becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This experience allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with professors and mentors, and utilizing these can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial apprehensions were unfounded. The obstacles of university life—whether social or academic—can always be navigated with the appropriate support. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone and that it is feasible to strike a balance between hard work and enjoyment.

For those preparing to commence their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when you require it, and seize every opportunity that arises. You will evolve in ways that you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be looking back at an extraordinary year of growth and discovery.
