### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in apprehension, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved individual, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the significant challenges I encountered early on was building friendships. If you’re a future student, this may also be a concern for you. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours confined in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, as time went by, I began to forge meaningful friendships—some of the finest I’ve experienced.

The essential takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you feel hesitant at first, there will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and social activities to facilitate connections with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re likely to encounter individuals who share your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more considerable. At times, I questioned whether I was managing to keep pace, especially when I observed others studying fervently.

What aided me during this period? First off, reminding myself that everyone is confronting similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a particular topic, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or professors. Requesting support is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill to cultivate in your first year.

#### The Importance of Support from Educators

One of the most comforting aspects of my course has been the tremendous backing from the faculty. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to input. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I do wish I had engaged with it sooner.

Earlier in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This experience proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with lecturers and support staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Utilize the available assistance—there’s no such thing as too much support.

#### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I have come to realize that the fears and concerns I harbored prior to starting university were mostly unwarranted. Numerous support frameworks are in place, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the difficulties. Most crucially, I’ve learned that I am never alone and that balancing academic pressures with an enjoyable and enriching student experience is entirely achievable.

If you are on the cusp of beginning university, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone. You may just astonish yourself.
