**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding my future. I was on the brink of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Coming from a background of being rather shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the more daunting aspects of initiating university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so anxious that I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to meet new people. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small discussions with others who were experiencing the same things. My primary takeaway? Make the effort early. If you’re not feeling prepared, don’t panic—there will be many icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more formidable. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others studying with great intensity.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone faced similar challenges. If I found something difficult to grasp, it was likely that others did as well. The vital lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, requesting help is one of the most essential skills you can foster in your initial year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the most rewarding aspects of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the encouraging staff. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and recognize the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open and offered guidance when necessary.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not engaging with it sooner. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort, which enabled me to form connections with faculty members. Building relationships with the staff is immensely advantageous, and there are various ways to achieve this. My suggestion? Make the most of the support that’s accessible—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that many of the fears and worries I faced before entering university were largely baseless. With the proper support from both staff and peers, I managed to tackle challenges and grow in self-assurance. Most importantly, I discovered that I’m never truly on my own and that balancing academic responsibilities with an enjoyable and rewarding university life is indeed achievable.
