**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who’s always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyable moments! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the First Hurdle: Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day moving into residence, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who have become like a second family here at Imperial.

What did I glean from this experience? Taking that first step is crucial. Even if you don’t feel equipped or at ease, don’t fret—there will be countless ice-breakers and activities to help you engage with others. Above all, remain genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and the university, you’re sure to connect with those who share your vibe.

### Managing the Workload and Academic Trials

Another major obstacle was getting acclimated to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was clearly significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more stark. Being thrust into such a setting can undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If a concept eludes you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it too. Thus, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson you take away from your first year—seek help from your classmates and instructors!

### The Value of Faculty Assistance

On the topic of faculty, the members of the Materials department are remarkable. They truly care about your success and understand the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open concerning any difficulties we were facing. Although I didn’t fully utilize the support services until late in the year, I wish I had recognized their value earlier.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to become better acquainted with the faculty, which proved to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so benefits you immensely. My primary message here? Make the most of the resources available to you—you can never have an excess of support!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was largely misplaced. With the vast support accessible from both faculty and peers, those anxieties can be mitigated. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to find a balance between enjoying life and managing the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines.
