**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been quite shy and introverted, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

A major challenge I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted that I remained cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to others. However, here I am today, proudly stating that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The crucial takeaway? Attempt to connect early on. If you don’t feel fully prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most significantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are likely to meet peers who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was getting used to the academic demands and complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift between the first and second term proved even more difficult. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying fervently.

What assisted me through this phase was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I found something unclear, it was likely others were struggling as well. The most beneficial action I took was to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help early is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Reaching Out for Help

One of the most comforting elements of my course was the exceptional backing from the teaching personnel. They genuinely desire students to thrive and remain open to feedback and concerns. Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I now wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

Early on, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role facilitated establishing connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty and support staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important lesson? Never hesitate to utilize the resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as excessive support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflection, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university was mostly unfounded. There are abundant support systems available, from instructors to fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. Above all, I’ve learned that I’m never solitary in this journey and that balancing academic expectations with a fulfilling university experience is entirely feasible.

If you’re about to embark on your adventure at Imperial, welcome the challenges, take the plunge, and seize the opportunities that surround you. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
