**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, ambiguity, and enthusiasm as I got ready to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unfamiliar was intimidating, especially for someone who has always been quite introverted. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the primary obstacles I encountered in the beginning was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this might resonate as one of your primary worries. I recall my first day in student housing, where I spent most of the time in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the most significant friendships of my lifetime.

What changed the game? Taking that first step. Even if you feel apprehensive, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to meet new people. The crucial lesson I absorbed is to remain true to yourself—Imperial boasts a varied community, and you’re sure to find others who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe your peers studying and assume they have all the answers.

The essential lesson? You are not alone. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s likely that others are experiencing it as well. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials department staff. They sincerely want students to thrive and are always ready to hear your concerns. Although I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

In the early days, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My major piece of advice? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the fears and worries I held before starting university were mostly baseless. With the appropriate support from both staff and fellow students, obstacles become far more surmountable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that balancing academic responsibilities with personal enjoyment is achievable, allowing for the maximization of every opportunity presented.

If you are preparing to embark on your university adventure, welcome the experience with an open heart. Take chances, seek help, and above all—savor the journey!
