**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been shy and introverted, plunging into such an environment was uncharacteristic for me. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal growth, numerous challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like a second family to me.
What did I derive from this experience? I understood that taking that first step at the year’s outset is vital. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, just be authentic. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Academic Load
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and the leap from the first to the second term was even greater. Being thrust into such an exacting environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others study and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.
Nonetheless, something that assisted me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. So, seek assistance—this was perhaps the most valuable lesson I gleaned during my first year. Whether approaching peers or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter numerous hurdles. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, which I regret not doing earlier.
At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step by volunteering as a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to become more acquainted with the staff, a connection that has proven invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to cultivate relationships with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of this. My main takeaway is to utilize the support that is extended to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illuminated that the anxiety I experienced, both prior to and throughout university, was chiefly unwarranted. There are abundant support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that you’re never truly alone. I’ve learned to navigate the stress from exams and deadlines while also allowing time for enjoyment, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
