**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the journey that awaited me. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was familiar with. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period characterized by personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost obstacles I encountered early in my journey was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, far too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to assert that I have formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who truly feel like a second family.

What lesson did I glean from this experience? Primarily, taking that crucial first step is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease immediately, don’t fret—plenty of social events and opportunities to meet others will arise. Above all, just be your authentic self. With such a varied student population, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a notable shift from A-levels, and an even more substantial transition from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving colleagues. However, one revelation that helped me persevere was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you encounter something confusing, chances are others are as well—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance.

This perhaps stands as the most crucial lesson I obtained during my first year: never hesitate to ask for help. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for support can significantly impact your experience.

### The Value of Staff Support

Regarding support, the teaching staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They earnestly wish for students to thrive and comprehend the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open channels of communication with us, always ready to listen and provide advice.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the start of the year, I made a bold choice by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with professors, and engaging with them can greatly enrich your time at university. My key takeaway? Seize every opportunity for support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

In hindsight, this year has illuminated the fact that many of the apprehensions I carried prior to beginning university were unfounded. An abundance of support is available from both staff and fellow students, and I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned the art of balancing academic hurdles while savoring university life.

For anyone gearing up to commence their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, request help as needed, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never imagined.
