**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. As an individual who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt akin to plunging into deep waters. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was the quest to form friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern you share. On my first day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to approach anyone. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
Imperial has transformed into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were similarly situated. My primary takeaway? Make that early leap. Even if you’re unsure, there will be ample ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with peers. Most significantly, be authentic—Imperial is rich with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, particularly when observing others studying hard.
What guided me through was the realization that everyone was confronting similar struggles. If I found something unclear, it was likely that others were also grappling with it. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the exceptional support offered by the faculty. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, ensuring our concerns were acknowledged.
Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to interact with staff, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your academic experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has taught me that the apprehensions and worries I harbored prior to commencing university were mostly unfounded. There is a myriad of support systems in place, encompassing staff and fellow students, to assist you during the transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish the journey and make the most of my time at Imperial.
If you’re on the brink of starting university, my straightforward advice is: embrace the challenges, seek support when necessary, and permit yourself to evolve. You’ll be astonished by how much you can accomplish in just one year.
