**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, diving headfirst into this experience felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a period marked by substantial personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what precisely has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: Surmounting the Initial Challenge
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be something that concerns you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was. So, what did I find out? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to interact with others. Most crucially, I found that being true to yourself is essential. With a wide array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Managing the Workload: A Challenging Learning Experience
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison.
What supported me through this was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. The most significant lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, reaching out for assistance is vital.
### Assistance from Faculty: An Invaluable Asset
On the subject of faculty, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing assistance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner.
At the start of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to better connect with the staff, which has been immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with your professors and staff, and it stands as one of the best things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway here is to fully leverage the support that’s available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Closing Reflections: Embracing the Experience
Overall, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was mostly misplaced. An abundance of support systems exists, both from staff and fellow students, to help alleviate those fears. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to have fun even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.
