### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may rank as one of your primary worries too. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted that I confined myself to my room for the entire day, too anxious to reach out to others. However, sitting here now, I can boldly state that I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships of my life—friends who feel like a second family.

So, what have I discovered? The secret is to take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings aimed at facilitating connections with others. Most crucially, be yourself. With such a varied student populace, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to the Academic Environment

Another significant hurdle was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from first to second term felt even more challenging. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed my peers studying with confidence.

What assisted me through this period was the awareness that I wasn’t in this alone. If you’re grappling with a particular concept, it’s likely that others are facing similar struggles. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or professors. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most precious lessons from my first year.

#### The Encouraging Staff and Support Services

One of the standout features of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. They understand the difficulties we encounter and actively work to address our concerns.

While I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year enabled me to build connections with faculty members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with the teaching staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I held before starting university were largely misplaced. With the extensive support available—both from staff and fellow students—there’s always help when you require it. Most importantly, I’ve found that it is indeed possible to balance academic challenges while enjoying the experience.

If you’re on the brink of beginning university, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’re never alone in this journey!
