**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, the thought of plunging headfirst into this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of remarkable personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what exactly has this year revealed to me, and what is my current state?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I confronted was building friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern you’re grappling with as well. On my first day moving into student housing, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
What lesson did I glean from this experience? I understood that taking that first step is vital, even if it feels awkward. If you aren’t ready immediately, don’t worry—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events tailored to help you engage with others. Above all, be yourself. With the diverse range of personalities throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Expectations
Another obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying diligently, but it’s crucial to remember that everyone shares this experience. If you’re finding something difficult to comprehend, chances are, so are others.
What’s the main takeaway from this? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most valuable insight I gained in my first year. Whether it’s from your classmates or academic personnel, requesting help is vital for navigating hurdles.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely aspire for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were consistently understanding of our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral care available until the year’s end, but I wish I had capitalized on it earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can drastically enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, there’s always assistance when needed. I’ve realized that I’m never entirely on my own, and I’ve learned how to merge enjoyment with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
