### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt a mixture of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the cusp of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having been somewhat shy and reserved in the past, entering this new phase was quite daunting. Now, reminiscing, I realize it has been a year rich with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
A significant hurdle I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to reach out to others. Yet, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I could have imagined.
Imperial has transformed into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone to engage in small conversations with fellow students experiencing similar situations. What was the most valuable lesson? Take that initial leap at the beginning of the academic year. Even if you feel unprepared, an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will present themselves. Above all, remain authentic—Imperial is teeming with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to find friends who resonate with you.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another obstacle was adjusting to the substantial workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite marked, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more challenging. At moments, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed peers dedicating themselves to their studies.
What got me through was the awareness that my classmates were also experiencing the same struggles. If I found certain concepts challenging, it was likely that others were too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for support is a crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
#### Assistance from Faculty and Well-being Programs
A standout aspect of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly care about our well-being and academic achievements. They acknowledge the challenges we encounter and ensure open communication throughout the year.
Although I only fully tapped into the pastoral support later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One proactive step I took was becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated strong connections with faculty members. Getting to know your professors and support staff is immensely beneficial, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to utilize the resources available. You can never have too much assistance!
#### Important Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I held before entering university were unfounded. With adequate support from both faculty and fellow students, those concerns became manageable. I’ve recognized that I’m never alone and that balancing academic challenges with a fulfilling university life is entirely achievable.
For those about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and embrace every opportunity that arises. You’ll experience growth in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be looking back on an extraordinary first year—just as I am now.
