**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, unsure, and skeptical about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, starting this new phase was quite daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant challenge I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a concern for you too. I vividly recall my first day moving into student housing—I was so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to reach out to anyone.
Now, looking back, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. The individuals I’ve encountered at university have come to feel like a second family. What was my strategy? Simply initiating casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
The important lesson? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be various icebreakers and social opportunities to help you engage with others. Most crucially, remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the academic intensity and expectations. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more pronounced. It was easy to feel inundated, particularly when I compared myself to peers who appeared to grasp material more swiftly.
What assisted me in persevering? Reminding myself that I wasn’t isolated. If I struggled with a subject, it was likely that others did as well. The most beneficial lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Requesting support is not indicative of weakness; it’s a vital skill for achievement.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most significant advantages of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely aspire for student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, ensuring our concerns were acknowledged.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. I also took on the role of a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with staff members. Cultivating these relationships proved to be immensely beneficial, and I urge new students to utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has demonstrated to me that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. There are numerous support mechanisms available, from staff to fellow students, to assist in navigating the difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone.
University life presents its fair share of stressors, from examinations to deadlines, but it also represents a chance to develop, forge lasting friendships, and relish the experience. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and savor every moment.
