**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been introverted and cautious, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A significant obstacle I encountered when starting university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you too. On my first day at student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone. However, looking at my life now, I can proudly say I have fostered some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

What’s the key takeaway? Take risks early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to engage with others. Above all, just be genuine. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At certain points, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others study and feeling like I was falling behind.

What assisted me during this period? Acknowledging I wasn’t in this alone. If I was grappling with an idea, it’s likely that others were too. The most beneficial action I took was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire during your first year.

### The Value of Guidance from Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely wish to see students thrive and are always receptive to feedback and issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral resources available until later in the academic year, but I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I have learned that many of the fears I had prior to starting university were often baseless. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly on my own and that it is possible to navigate academic challenges while enjoying the university life.

For anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: welcome the challenges, ask for help when necessary, and most importantly, savor the experience.
