**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university. Being someone who has always been introverted and cautious, entering this new phase felt like an enormous task. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, trials, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re about to embark on this journey, this may be a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim to have formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life.

Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and it all started with stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others experiencing similar feelings. My key takeaway? Take that plunge at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, there’s no need to fret—many icebreaker events and chances to connect with people await. Most crucially, be true to yourself. With a diverse community of students, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Rigor

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more overwhelming. It’s natural to question your abilities when observing others studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.

What benefited me the most was acknowledging that we’re all navigating similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are your peers are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is among the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### Valuing the Support from Faculty

One of the aspects I’ve come to treasure is the remarkable backing from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely cares about students’ success and remain receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.

Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I made the bold move to become a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with the faculty. This experience proved to be immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can substantially enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Utilize the support provided—there’s never too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. A multitude of support systems exists, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring no one has to face challenges alone. Most significantly, I’ve discovered how to juggle academic demands while enjoying my university life.

If you’re about to commence your adventure at Imperial, remember that obstacles will arise, but so will tremendous opportunities for personal development. Take that leap, seek help, and fully embrace the journey—you won’t regret it.
