**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was poised to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, stepping into this new phase was daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary difficulties I encountered at the outset was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your top worries as well. I recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the whole day inside my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. However, reflecting now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.
I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations and shared experiences. My key lesson? Take the plunge early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be plenty of ice-breaking events and ways to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is home to a diverse range of individuals, and you are sure to find friends who share your interests.
### Adapting to the Scholarly Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic rigor and volume of coursework. The difference from A-levels was distinct, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even trickier. It’s easy to become daunted or question your abilities when you are in the company of high-achieving colleagues.
What aided me the most was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find it difficult to grasp something, chances are others are facing the same issues. The best course of action is to seek help—be it from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty and Seeking Assistance
One of the most fulfilling elements of my first year was connecting with the teaching staff. The Materials Science department is exceptionally supportive, and the professors genuinely wish for our success. They are aware of the hurdles we encounter and foster open dialogue throughout the semester.
Although I didn’t capitalize on pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to interact more closely with the faculty. This journey highlighted how essential it is to develop relationships with professors and utilize the support resources available. My recommendation? Don’t hesitate to reach out—there’s never too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my experience, my first year has taught me that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. There are numerous support networks in place, from faculty to fellow students, ready to assist you in navigating challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that balancing academic demands with a rewarding university experience is entirely feasible.
For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the obstacles, seek help when necessary, and relish the experience. It’s a year of transformation, and you’ll emerge more resilient than you ever thought possible.
