**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, uncertainty, and a hint of fear regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been timid and reserved, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. In hindsight, I observe a year rich with personal development, hurdles, and remarkable experiences. What insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could also be a major concern for you. On my first day in student housing, I was so anxious that I remained in my room all day, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can unequivocally state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The crucial lesson? Take that first step. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social activities to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university-level education was a considerable leap, with the workload increasing as the year unfolded. At times, it felt easy to become overwhelmed and question my capabilities, particularly when I compared myself to others. However, I soon recognized that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I found a topic difficult, it was likely that others did too.

My best piece of advice? Don’t hold back from seeking assistance. Be it from peers, tutors, or lecturers, asking for help is an invaluable skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most gratifying aspects of my first year was developing relationships with the academic staff. The lecturers and support teams in the Materials department are genuinely invested in the well-being and success of their students. They are aware of the challenges we encounter and are always receptive to feedback.

Although I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to establish connections with faculty, which proved immensely advantageous. There are countless ways to interact with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the support on offer—there’s never too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced before starting university was mostly unwarranted. There is a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, and no one is ever genuinely alone in their difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to harmonize academic challenges with personal enjoyment, fully embracing my time at Imperial.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: welcome the experience, seek assistance when necessary, and don’t shy away from stepping outside your comfort zone. You may just astonish yourself with the extent of your growth.
