**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubt, and excitement as I prepared to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone previously shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a path filled with development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what have I discovered, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be at the forefront of your worries as well. On my first day in my student accommodation, I spent hours inside my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, now I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has transformed into a second home, all it took was initiating simple conversations with those in similar situations.
The key takeaway? Make the move early. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, be authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Expectations
Transitioning from A-levels to university coursework was a considerable leap, and the workload escalated as the year unfolded. At times, it was easy to feel swamped, particularly when I compared myself to others who seemed to catch on to concepts faster. Yet, I soon understood that everyone experiences difficulties at some point. If you’re puzzled about something, it’s likely others are in the same boat.
The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff, asking for assistance is one of the most invaluable skills you can hone in your first year.
### The Encouraging Staff and Resources
A highlight of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff truly care about students’ well-being and academic achievements, consistently checking in and responding to concerns. Even though I didn’t tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
Taking on the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to engage more closely with the staff, which was an invaluable experience. There are numerous opportunities to cultivate relationships with faculty and support staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My biggest insight? Utilize the available resources—there’s no such thing as too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I harbored before starting university were mostly baseless. With the appropriate backing from staff and fellow students, I never felt isolated. More significantly, I learned the importance of balancing academic demands with personal enjoyment, fully embracing my time at Imperial.
For anyone on the verge of commencing their university adventure: face the challenges head-on, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience. It’s a period of growth, learning, and creating lasting memories.
