### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation regarding the road ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might rank among your foremost worries as well. I recall spending my first day in student housing retreating to my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. However, as time moved on, I discovered I was forging some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever known.
What insight did I gain from this experience? First, taking that initial step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel uncertain, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is simply to be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to connect with people who share your passions and beliefs.
#### Adapting to the Academic Challenges
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of university-level coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more intense. At times, witnessing others study effectively shook my confidence in my own capabilities.
What aided me during this period was the realization that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I found it difficult to grasp a concept, the likelihood was that many others did too. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.
#### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the most comforting elements of my journey was the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge strong connections with staff members, which was invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Capitalize on the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has demonstrated that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to commencing university were unfounded. With the right backing from both staff and fellow students, challenges become significantly more manageable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and that balancing academic pressures with a fulfilling university journey is entirely feasible.
