**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quite timid and introverted, embarking on this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who feel like a second family.
What’s the lesson here? Taking that initial leap is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, be authentic to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
The transition from A-levels to university study was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I noticed my peers studying while I felt overwhelmed. Yet, I soon realized that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were too.
My top piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether from fellow students or professors, seeking assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most fulfilling elements of my first year was forming connections with the teaching staff. The professors and support team in the Materials department truly want to see students thrive. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and keep communication channels open throughout the year.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the fears and anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. With the appropriate support—from friends, staff, or student services—there’s always a path to overcome challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to strike a balance between academic pressures and enjoying university life.
