**Reflections on My Initial Year Exploring Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with nerves, apprehension, and enthusiasm as I got ready to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Entering into the unfamiliar was intimidating, especially for someone who had always been somewhat bashful and reserved. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, academic hurdles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was establishing friendships. If you are an upcoming student, this might also be one of your main worries. I recall my first day in student housing—I was so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I spent the whole day in my room, steering clear of social engagements.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The secret? Taking that initial leap. Striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances allowed me to forge meaningful ties. If you’re feeling apprehensive, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect will arise. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to discover peers who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level education. The shift from A-levels was quite apparent, and the leap from the first to second term felt even more drastic. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when witnessing others studying effectively while I grappled with certain ideas.

What aided me through this was the understanding that I wasn’t the only one. If I didn’t grasp something, it was likely that others were experiencing similar struggles. The best suggestion I can offer? Seek assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, asking for help is essential. Learning to inquire and collaborate with others is one of the most valuable skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the most remarkable aspects of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff truly care about students’ well-being and academic achievements. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and proactively communicate with us to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to engage more with staff, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with professors and academic advisors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support that are available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained and Looking Forward

As I contemplate my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial fears were unfounded. The backing from both staff and fellow students has been instrumental in helping me navigate university life. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that managing academic pressures alongside enjoyable experiences is achievable.

As I progress forward, I’m eager to keep growing, learning, and maximizing my time at Imperial. To any incoming students feeling anxious—embrace the journey, take that initial step, and remember that support is always at hand.
