**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Back in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and excitement as I geared up to embark on my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Entering this new chapter was intimidating, particularly for someone who had always been introverted. Reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what lessons have I gathered, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary struggles I faced when starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective learner, this concern might resonate with you as well. I recall my first day moving into student housing—I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, far too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone.

Looking at my situation now, I confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with stepping outside my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others who were equally new to the environment.

The essential takeaway? Take that initial leap. Even if you’re feeling unprepared, there will be an abundance of icebreaker functions and chances to meet others. Above all, be authentic—Imperial boasts a rich tapestry of individuals, and you are sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was conspicuous, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more rigorous. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing my peers studying and feeling like I was lagging behind.

What aided me through this? Recognizing that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I found something difficult to comprehend, it was likely that others were navigating similar challenges. The most important lesson I learned was to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Seeking help is not indicative of weakness; rather, it’s a crucial skill that can significantly ease your university experience.

### The Value of Support and Community

One of the most enriching facets of my first year was the remarkable support provided by the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in students’ well-being and academic achievements. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and prioritize open communication to address any issues that arise.

Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be an invaluable journey. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxieties prior to starting university are often unfounded and that support is always accessible, whether from staff members or fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve found a way to balance academic demands with enjoyment.

If you’re on the verge of beginning university, my guidance is straightforward: embrace the adventure, seek help whenever necessary, and permit yourself to evolve. University is a path filled with challenges, but it’s also a chance to forge lasting friendships, cultivate resilience, and create unforgettable moments.
