**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, uncertainty, and doubts about what the future held. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been reserved and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and remarkable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the struggle to make friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a top concern for you as well. On my very first day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I remained in my room for the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Nevertheless, as the year unfolded, I found myself among some of the best friends I’ve ever encountered. I’ve formed a second family here at Imperial, which all commenced with brief conversations with others in similar situations.

What did I take away from this experience? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t think you’re prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and encounters to connect with new individuals. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to find yourself comparing your progress to others and feeling inadequate. However, I soon recognized that everyone has their struggles. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others share your confusion.

My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s from fellow students or academic staff, reaching out for support is one of the most valuable skills you can hone in your first year.

### The Significance of Support from Faculty

One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the amazing support from the department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always open to input. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it much earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to interact with staff members, which turned out to be extremely helpful. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly impact your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the fears and anxieties I harbored before entering university were largely unfounded. With adequate backing from staff and fellow students, challenges become far more manageable. Above all, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is entirely feasible, even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.

For anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: embrace the journey, take that initial step, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ll be amazed at how much you develop along the way.
