**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been timid and reserved, entering this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the foremost challenges I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever known.
Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, beginning with simple conversations with individuals who were in a similar situation. My key lesson? Make that initial move. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with new faces. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse personalities, and you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the heavy workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was marked by a notable increase, with an even more substantial leap from the first to the second term. It’s easy to become disheartened, particularly when observing others study and starting to question your own proficiency.
What assisted me during this time was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a particular concept, there’s a good chance peers are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it be from fellow students or faculty. Learning to request help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Guidance from Staff
A standout aspect of my experience has been the exceptional support provided by the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, ensuring that our concerns were acknowledged.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with your professors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced prior to commencing university was largely unwarranted. There exists a plethora of support structures, both from staff and fellow students, to smooth your transition. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic responsibilities while savoring my university experience.
If you’re about to begin your journey at Imperial, remember that challenges will arise, but so too will remarkable opportunities for personal growth. Take the plunge, reach out for help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience!
