**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, uncertainties, and a sense of trepidation about the future. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously kept to myself, embarking on this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, it reveals a path of personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant hurdle I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could also be among your major worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation—just days before the term officially commenced—I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were similarly situated.
What did I discover? Taking that first courageous step is always rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect abound. Most importantly, I learned that being yourself is the best approach. With such a diverse student population, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Expectations
Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the materials. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when observing others who are studying fervently.
What helped me navigate this period? Reminding myself that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find certain concepts puzzling, others likely feel the same. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or professors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can foster in your initial year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the standout aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to discussions regarding any challenges we may encounter. They understand our experiences and actively pursue feedback to enhance our journey.
Even though I didn’t fully engage with the support services available until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the onset of the year, I took a plunge and became a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, it has revealed that many of the apprehensions I harbored prior to starting university were unwarranted. An abundance of support exists from both staff and peers. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is indeed possible.
For anyone gearing up to embark on their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to put yourself out there. University is a time for growth, and with the right mindset, it can be an incredibly fulfilling experience.
