**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. As someone who had always been shy and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I realize I experienced a year full of personal development, challenges, and countless memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most significant hurdles I faced at the start was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may resonate as one of your greatest concerns. I can recall my first day in student housing, where I spent the time hiding in my room, too afraid to step outside and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends of my life.
The pivotal lesson I took away? Embrace the leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker events and opportunities exist to connect with others experiencing the same situation. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Transitioning from A-levels to university posed a substantial challenge, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more profound. At times, it was easy to become overwhelmed, particularly when surrounded by diligent classmates. However, I soon recognized that everyone shared similar struggles. If I grappled with a topic, the likelihood was that others were as well.
My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether from fellow students or instructors, seeking help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most comforting aspects of my program was the extraordinary support from the teaching staff. The personnel in the Materials department genuinely aspire for student success and are consistently receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position facilitated relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My crucial takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I held before commencing university were unwarranted. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I navigated challenges and experienced growth both academically and personally. Most importantly, I discovered that I was never truly alone and that it’s feasible to harmonize hard work with enjoyment, even during intense periods like exams and deadlines.
